
Charles Roosevelt Marbury, born on March 19, 1949, to Ethel Marbury and the late Charlie Rosevelt Marbury Sr. in Rockford, Alabama, peacefully passed away on May 21st, 2024, around 10 am. He graduated from Wenonah High School on May 29, 1967.
Charles served with honor in the United States Marine Corps from February 11, 1968, to September 10, 1970, during the Vietnam War. He was later transferred to the Marine Corps Reserve.
Following his military service, Charles dedicated himself to work, commencing his career at the American Cast Iron Pipe Co. and later joining the UAB Callahan Eye Foundation in March 1999.
A devout member of the Bryant Chapel AME Church, Charles served faithfully, notably as a founding member of the male chorus. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people of all levels, irrespective of status or income.
Charles was diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer on October 23, 2019. He fought cancer with the spirit of a Marine and a soldier of Christ, battling through remission and enduring several treatments and rounds of chemotherapy. He led his final song in the men's choir on April 28, 2024. Though he couldn't stand the whole time, he could still make a joyful noise unto the Lord.
Charles was preceded in death by his father, sisters Mary Inez Marbury and Shirley Harris, brother-in-law Pastor Fred Harris, and wives Merlyn Littlepage Marbury and Belinda Hatch Marbury.
He leaves behind cherished memories to be held dear by his current wife, Doreen Marbury, his former wife, Luella Kyneard Marbury, and their children Gerald (Michelle) Marbury of Powder Springs, GA, and Gevona (Willie) Hicks of Live Oak, TX. He is also survived by his brothers Terry (Shay) Marbury and Terrence (Ann) Marbury, sister Delphine Marbury, five grandchildren - Landon Wren, William Hicks, Whitney Hicks, Imani Marbury, and Isaiah Marbury - as well as numerous loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Public visitation will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2024 from 12 -6pm, with family hour from 4 - 6pm at Davenport & Harris Funeral Home - 301 MLK Jr. Drive SW, Birmingham, Alabama 35211. The Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 31, 2024 at 11:00am at Bryant Chapel AME Church - 2125 Spaulding Street SW, Birmingham, Alabama 35221.
