From Legacy.com: "Hugh Lincoln Lucas Hugh Lincoln Lucas passed away on March 20, 2021 at Saint Rose Hospital in Hayward, California after a year long battle with illness. Hugh was born in Chicago on June 8, 1944. He grew up in Michigan, north of Detroit, the middle of five children. He was known for his quirky sense of humor from an early age and could always make his friends and family laugh. He was an avid sports fan; he loved to watch all sports on TV and was a devoted reader of Sports Illustrated all his life. He loved animals, most especially dogs. We cannot speak of his life without mentioning his beloved Martin "the best dog in the world". He lived for a time in New York City and then moved to San Francisco in 1969. He found his true home there with other like-minded activists protesting the Viet Nam war. He worked in healthcare for 40 years and was known by his coworkers and patients to be extremely kind, compassionate, and caring. He was a tireless worker in his healthcare workers union, NUHW. He enrolled in San Francisco City College to get certified in union/labor relations and went to bat for many of his peers in union negotiations. The best testimony to his life is the number of people who knew him and were so fond of him, everywhere he went. His genuine concern for people and his kindness radiated from him and touched many. He was known for often giving the peace sign and saying "have a peaceful day" which was also the message on his phone for voicemail. He often joked that if he ran for office, his slogan would be "Hugh for Humans"! Hugh loved music: rock, folk, and blues. He was an early and long time fan of Bob Dylan as well as protest music and the blues. Music was a huge part of his life. Hugh had a devoted circle of friends with him in his last days and his family is forever grateful for their care of Hugh. He is preceded in death by his son Dylan Lucas. He is survived by four siblings: Mark Lucas, Pat Jeffs, Adele Keating, and Jan Lucas-Grimm. He was a kind and gentle soul and will be missed."
