Karmen Charles Fox I (Crow Tail) was born on December 12th, 1961 in Minot, ND to Thelma Martin and Alvino Fox.
Karmen lived a majority of his life in Fort Berthold, White Shield, ND. His family lived in California for a little while. He attended White Shield Elementary until 1975. He then moved to Dickinson, ND with his grandfather Frank Fox, Jr. and Uncle Mark Fox. Karmen and Mark attended school in Dickinson. He ran for their cross country team. In fact, they took championship in the fall of 1977. Karmen told his kids every time he ran at a meet at home, they would play the song “Fox On The Run”. Then they moved to Bismarck and he graduated high school from Century High. Karmen was a very intelligent man and graduated at the top of his class with over 300 students. He was interested in the medical field and was selected to attend INMED at Grand Forks. Soon after, he joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Hawaii for 4 years. He received excellent evaluations for being a navigator on the USS Joseph Strauss (DDG 16).
He returned home to Fort Berthold in May of 1983. During this time he courted and eventually married “the love of his life” Yvette LaCroix in 1984. Shorty after Chance Montel was born, they moved to Wahpeton, ND where they attended the North Dakota State School of Science. Karmen was enrolled in the Nursing Program. Karmen and Yvette divorced in 1987 and he moved to California for a short time. After returning to North Dakota, they welcomed their second child, Charlee Lyn to the world in November 1988. Chad Naaman followed in January of 1990. The Fox family moved to Brookings, SD which is when Karmen Charles the 2nd was born. They moved to Bismarck for a short time, then returned to White Shield to live with his mother, Thelma, after his father passed away. Due to a tragic car accident leaving Karmen disabled, he was unable to work. He became a stay at home dad and attended his daughter’s and sons’ basketball games along with other childhood extracurricular activities. He served on the Parent Advisory Committee for the Little Warrior Head Start and received an outstanding parent award. Karmen was a die hard Vikings fan, no matter how many times they lost. Karmen was very spiritual and traditional at heart. He attended Native American church meetings, sundances and sweats regularly. Karmen and Yvette remarried in 2001. At this time, he worked at the Parshall Resource Center as a Resident Assistant. He also served one term on the White Shield School Board. After their divorce in 2003, he lived in White Shield and watched his children grow to become young adults, and eventually graduate from high school. He also lived with and took care of his mother until her passing in November 2007. Karmen welcomed his first grandchild Cashdyn (Cashman) Montel Dickens. A year and a half later, he welcomed another grandson Creedance (Creed) Dion Fox and two months later he welcomed another grandson, Kingsdyn (The King) Max Dickens. Karmen loved and cherished his grandsons dearly. Money and materialistic things meant nothing to him. He would give the shirt off his back in a second. Someone commented on Facebook that they didn’t know him personally but remember him at a basketball game in Parshall where some kid told him he had nice shoes, so he took them off and gave them to him. This is just one of the many nice gestures Karmen did. He never said anything bad about anyone. He always loved his second mother LuJuanna LaCroix. She was a very special person in his life. He was also a Godfather to Donald Painte, Jr., Derrick LaCroix, and Megan Blacksmith. He had a big heart for other people.
Karmen entered the spirit world the morning of December 1st, 2011. We find great relief knowing he was greeted by his parents, grandparents, and siblings.
Karmen is survived by three sons, Chance Montel (Mariah) of White Shield, Chad Naaman (Cassidy) and Karmen Charles (Amanda) both of New Town, ND; one daughter, Charlee Lyn (Sky Eagle Deer); grandsons, Cashdyn Montel and Kingsdyn Max of White Shield, and Creedance Dion of New Town; two Godsons, Donald Painte, Jr. and Derrick LaCroix; and one Goddaughter, Megan Blacksmith and the Soggy Bottom Boys.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alvino and Thelma; his grandparents, Frank and Pauline Fox; one stepfather, Paul Howling Wolf, Sr.; three sisters, two brothers, and one child.
He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
