DANVERS — Stephen R. “Steve” Brienen, 68, of Danvers passed away at 4:35 p.m. Friday (June 21, 2013) at Heartland Healthcare, Normal.

A service celebrating his life will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Centennial Christian Church, Bloomington. Dr. Larry Colvin will officiate. Burial with honors will be at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Community Cancer Center, Normal, or Centennial Church, Bloomington.

Steve was born Oct. 6, 1944, in Pekin, the son of Jarvis “Jib” and Ethel Iona Eisenberg Brienen. He married Lucerne Ortman on April 10, 1965, in Bloomington. She survives.

Also surviving are his mom, Marcella Brienen, Bloomington; three children, Shaun Brienen, Bloomington; Erin Brienen, Springfield, Mo.; and Mark (Nicole) Brienen, Normal; three grandchildren, Hannah Brienen, Springfield, Mo.; Branda Brienen, Bloomington; and Destiny Rucker, Springfield, Mo.; two brothers, Gary (Dorothy) Brienen, Pekin, and John (Tracy) Brienen, Barrington; two sisters, Rochelle (Lyle) Miner, Normal, and Teresa (Jeff) Key, Hawthorn Woods; and many nieces and nephews.        

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and an infant daughter.

Steve served in the U.S. Air Force. Steve was a Bloomington police officer for 10 years and was elected for five terms as sheriff of McLean County. He was an educator having taught for many years and was an elder in his church. Steve also was a radio talk show personality with WJBC. Although he was very accomplished, his family was his greatest source of pride and joy.

Sorry whenever one of our own passes away. Reminds us of our mortality. Probably closer to Steve through his illness these past few years and now it's over. Gonna miss ya, buddy.
