Oren Schaab (Teacher)

NORMAL — Oren R. Schaab, 82, of Normal passed away at 6:25 a.m. on Wednesday (Dec. 31, 2014) at Liberty Village of LeRoy.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington with the Rev. Seth Schutte officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service at the memorial home on Saturday. Full military rites will be accorded by the Bloomington-Normal American Legion Honor Guard.

Interment will be at Scogin Hill Cemetery in Bloomington. Memorials may be made to Illinois Special Olympics, WJBC Brotherhood Tree or a charity of the donor's choice.

Oren was born on June 23, 1932, in Normal, a son to Wilhelm G. And Lena Demler Schaab. He married Rose Ann Hendricks on July 31, 1954, in Bloomington.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Kimberly (Eric) Schaab-Ozier, Mahomet; a son, Randy (Jill) Schaab, Normal; three sisters, Arlene Gittings, Bloomington; LaVerne Bittner, Fairbury; and Martha West, Congerville; and five grandchildren, Colleen (Seth) Schutte, Farmer City; Heidi Schaab, Normal; Kyle Ozier, Mahomet; Regan Schaab, Normal; and Parker Schaab, Normal.

Preceding him in death are his parents; a grandson, Matthew Ozier; two sisters, Bernice Leibel and Joan Schaab; and a brother, Gene Schaab.

Oren was born and raised in Normal. He was educated through Metcalf, University High School and Illinois State University where he received his bachelor's and first master's degree in industrial technology, with additional master's degrees in counseling and school administration. With these, he taught for 36 years through District 87, first at Bloomington Junior High, then at the Area Vocational Center through Bloomington High School where he was the guidance counselor, promoting the program to high school students and businesses throughout McLean County. Oren also helped start the GED program at the McLean County jail, helping educate inmates to obtain their GED.

He proudly served with the U.S. Army and was an active member of the Normal American Legion Post No. 635. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and Illinois State University Redbird basketball.

Oren was a loving husband, father and grandfather who supported his family in all their activities and outings.
