I knew Doug well as a teenager and young man, less well as an older man, until the last two years of his life – and learned to love him as the brother I never had. I miss him very much. I feel very sad that our friendship was never rekindled to the degree I wanted it to be. His friendship helped each of us tremendously during our teens and early twenties. I cannot imagine having had a better friend than he was to me then. He had such a large presence: at his best he was brilliant, creative, erudite, kind, caring, energetic, adventuresome, courageous and outrageously funny. I will always treasure those memories of him and think of him that way. I know that his absence will be keenly felt by all of us whose lives he touched.
