Alan was a good friend to John Ed and me from almost the first day we met him. I remember Alan always refering to me as "the little DEGO". He had a twinkle in his eye whenever he said it. Sophmore and Junior years he would send me notes and sign John Ed's name.
After high school Alan joined the service. One afternoon when our Jeff was a new born, he and Joe Reinholtz showed up at our door. They were home on leave and wanted JE to go out with them. I wasn't crazy about the idea but I was out of baby formula and they said they would bring some right back before they went out. Well, around 10 that night in rolls JE, several hours late and NO formula! I think I scared Alan and Joe to death because we didn't see them again for years! Of course we all remained friends but I never missed a chance to mention it to him.
When we were building our house on Brookshire, Alan showed up one day and came back everyday after that until our house was finished. Some nights it was the three of us working and others it was Alan and me. I learned carpentry from Alan that summer and I'm gratful to him for being the perfecionist that he was. It has served me well.
As Alan's cancer progressed John Ed was by his side as much as possible doing whatever he could for his friend. Once when I popped in, Alan looked up and said "Oh, there's the little Dego."
We miss you, Alan, and we're wondering what you're doing to remodel Heaven. Maybe the Golden Gates needed more lights or the hinges were squeeking.
