KATHERINE SMITH Katherine Isabell Smith, Boulder City, passed away Jan. 16, 2014, at the age of 87. She was born March 9, 1926, the daughter of John Henry Phillips and Susan Olive Grant, in McGill, a small mining town near Ely. She moved to Boulder City as a teenager with her family after her father and brothers, Clyde and William, found work as electricians at Hoover Dam. While the family petitioned the government to purchase a lot on Hopi Place to build a home, they lived in a tent in McKeeversille, a temporary housing camp in the area known today as Lakeview. Katherine's husband of 58 years, the late Bruce A. Smith, was a machinist at Hoover Dam for more than 35 years. She was a member of the third graduating class of Boulder City High School and lived in Boulder City for 72 years. As a young woman, she worked for Trans World Airlines (TWA) when the company flew in and out of the Boulder City Airport, known at the time as Bullock Field. Katherine was an active volunteer. She taught swimming classes for the Red Cross, led a Brownie Scout troop and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She devoted herself to her family and loved art throughout her life. Katherine enjoyed painting still life watercolors and oils. In retirement, Katherine and her late husband traveled extensively across the United States. In her later years, she enjoyed spending time with family as well as friends at the Boulder City Senior Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce A. Smith; her brothers, John, Clyde and William Phillips; and her parents. She is survived by her two children, Bruce F. Smith and Barbara S. Poweleit; son-in-law, Jerry T. Poweleit; sister-in-law, Shirley Phillips; granddaughter, Natalie Brown; and grandson-in-law, Randy Brown. The family extends its sincere gratitude to the staff and volunteers from the Senior Center of Boulder City and the Nevada State Veterans' Home for their care of our beloved mother and grandmother. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at the Boulder City Cemetery, 501 Adams Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either the Senior Center of Boulder City or the Boulder City Animal Shelter.
