Donald (not Dan) Woodman, Class of 1947 – Obit: Funeral services for Donald Woodman of Safford were conducted Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the First United Methodist Church of Safford by Pastor Judy Boroto. Concluding services followed in the Hubbard Cemetery.
Donald Huntly Woodman was born to Gladys Jane Hunt and Frank William Woodman on Nov. 20, 1929, in Anaconda, Mont. He spent his youth there, growing up in a small mining community.
In the early 1940s, Donald's family relocated to Henderson, Nev., where his father obtained work to help support the war effort abroad. While there, Donald excelled at football, starting on the varsity team.
Soon thereafter, his family again relocated briefly to Fort Smith, Ark., and then to Louisiana, where Donald attended Louisiana State University and later Louisiana Tech, where he majored in forestry.
In 1955, Donald graduated from Louisana Tech with a bachelor's degree in forestry. He married Lucille LeBato on June 4, 1955. Together Donald and Lucille made their residence in Missoula, where Donald had obtained work with the Montana State Forestry Department.
In the early 1960s, Donald and Lucille moved to Oregon, where they were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Cindy, in June of 1961. In the late 1960s, Donald moved his family to Kingman when he was transferred with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
In 1973, the family moved to the Gila Valley, settling in Safford. This move would be the last move for their family. After Donald retired from the BLM, he and Lucille could often be found on the road to Montana, where they had purchased a cabin.
Donald passed away Oct. 1, 2004. Donald will be remembered for his belief that there was no compromising on his principles and, while standing for what he believed, he never meant to make it a personal issue.
Donald is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lucille of Safford; his daughter, Cindy of Safford; and a granddaughter, Lauren of Safford.
