Shirley Olson (Bradley) (1958)
David was my favorite brother - that says it all. David (and I) were born in Rawlins, Wyoming.
David Lee Olson was born on Ground Hog's Day, February 2, 1938. Our parents were Stanley I. Olson and Katharine (Jacobson) Olson. Things didn't work out for our parents in Arizona after Stanley's return from the war. Katharine made a brave and smart move by divorcing him and moving the family to Boulder City in 1949 where she worked for the Bureau of Reclamation. Like David, she was a brain and wrote the first computer program for the Bureau.
David was the only person I knew who never brought a book home but had better grades than most. After graduating, David was drafted into the Navy and was on three different aircraft carriers - the Hornet, the Enterprise and he ended his tour on the Coral Sea. I met his ship in Alameda, California when they returned from a long tour of duty - it was spectacular!
David met Carol in California and they came to Las Vegas in 1962 and married in one of the wedding chapels. They had one son, Edward David Olson, born in 1964. [My favorite nephew.]
David completed the Pipefitters training and worked in that trade until he died. David's doctor told him to go meet with a physician at the UCLA Medical Hospital who had completed several successful operations to remove a certain enzyme that troubles some people. Rather than take pills the rest of his life, he decided to take this elective surgery - which was not necessary or mandatory for a healthy life. Anyway, the doctor screwed up and David died on December 15, 1988. He was buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Cypress.
My nephew Edward called me in January 1992 and asked me to help him plan his wedding to Renee, his fiancé - which we did at the Little Chapel of the West. Famous place, but like others, no longer there.
Edward and Renee had one son, and he was named after his grandfather - David Lee Olson. [My favorite grand nephew.] Big David would have loved Ed's choice of a wife in Renee and his grandson, David. [Just hot off the press - Grandson David and his wife Brittney are expecting their first child. I know David is looking down on all of them and keeping them safe.] And the Olson name is carried on. Hurrah!
