Michael Merrill (1955)
This is the Obituary for my Brother Jerry Merrill
Jerald Carl “Jerry” Merrill
Dr. Jerald C. Merrill, 65, passed away Nov. 29 2005 after a long and heroic battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Ann and Carl Cox Merrill.
Jerry was born in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 12, 1940. He spent most of his childhood years in Boulder City, Nevada and attended local schools. He graduated from University of Nevada, Reno in 1962 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from UNR in 1971.
He moved to Pensacola in 1993 as a 10-year employee of Gelman Sciences, now Pall Membrane Technology Center and was manager of analytical chemistry.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 43 years, Shireen, and son Carl, both of Pensacola; daughter and son-in-law Karen and Glenn Tjapkes, grandson Benjamin Jerald Tjapkes, all of Grand Rapids, MI; his brother Michael H. Merrill (Pam) of El Cajon, CA; uncle Herbert M. Jones (Jan) of Las Vegas, NV; niece, Vonna Read (Chris) of Cantonment; and nephew, John M. Merrill (Michelle) of Albuquerque, NM. He leaves behind numerous cousins, other loved ones, and good friends.
Jerry was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, where he was an ordained elder and a loyal member of the choir. He was very active as a Scouter with the local Esca-Rosa Boy Scout Council. He was also a member of the local chapter of American Society for Quality.
His love of music became a second career when he joined the Fiesta Barbershop Chorus. He served in many official capacities and was twice given their Barbershopper of the Year award. He sang bass with his quartet, An Inside Straight, and competed at district competitions.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, December 5, 2005 at Northminster Presbyterian Church with visitation and reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerry’s memory to Northminster Presbyterian Church, Esca-Rosa Council of Boy Scouts, Pensacola Fiesta Barbershop Chorus or a charity of your choice.
