Judy Mitchell (Johnson)

Judith Ann Johnson (1942 - 2014)

Judith Ann Johnson

Ivins, Utah

Judith Ann Johnson passed away peacefully July 16, 2014 in her Kayenta home with her husband and family at her bedside, after a long battle with cancer. She was born Judith Ann Mitchell November 7th, 1942 in Phoenix, Arizona to Andrew J. and Mabel McKnight Mitchell.

Judy grew up in Beaver Dam, Arizona and Bunkerville and Boulder City, Nevada, where her parents were educators. She was an exceptionally bright student who received many scholastic awards including a trip to Washington DC where she was greeted by then President Eisenhower. Over the course of her life she took delight in fishing, theater and opera, bridge, knitting and cooking. She had a unique gift for close friendships.

Judy Johnson was a hard-working, successful business woman. She knew how to creatively organize and lead her employees, friends and family, especially as a big sister to Toni, Michele (Franklin Kolsky) and Jill (Marlo Krogue).

Judy was a devoted and cherished wife to Marvin Johnson; she was a dedicated mother to Steven Boiles, Robert Highfill, Shelli (Jeff Royer), Mace and Rick Johnson (Liz); she was a delightfully loving and energetic grandmother to Andrew, Rob, Kyle, Matt, Lauren, Amanda, and Katelyn; and she was an inspiring great grandmother to Autumn and Kamy, to whom she willingly gave her last full measure of love and support.

She was preceded in death by her son Steven and by her parents, whose last years she helped make rich and full.

Judy and Marv give thanks to the many friends and family whose friendship meant so much in their retirement years.

Services will be held Monday, July 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gunlock Ward Chapel, 733 North Main Street, Gunlock, Utah. Judy requests that in lieu of flowers, you would consider donating to the Huntsman Cancer Center: http://healthcare.utah.edu/huntsmancancerinstitute/giving/

Just came across this and can't believe it.  Judy always stands in my mind as representing rebellion and freedom, which go hand in hand from my point of view.  I just regret she wasn't appreciated (including by me) for that.  It's sure not the conformists who created this nation, the main industry of our state, the acceptance of no-fault divorce (as I remember in the fifties one couldn't even say the word--yet it had become a major rebelious element of Clark County's economy by then--and traveling and living in the Philippines, which is the only country in the world which still doesn't recognize divorce, I have second-hand knowledge through in-laws of the hypocrisies, psychological damage and abuses caused by such ancient thinking), and now marijuana legalization (the laws against which created such incredible suffering and magnitudes of injustices).  I don't know how convoluted and, maybe, inappropriate all this seems, but I do know that it's the rebels who create social change and greater justice in the world, so RIP Judy, queen and icon in my eyes of rebellion/progress for the last 40 or so years and please accept my apologies for not appreciating you and that truth about you much earlier, when I could have done something.
