Dr. BARBARA ALICE HOPE LATENSER Obituary

LATENSER
Dr. BARBARA ALICE HOPE
Rest in Peace, Barbara Latenser, MD. There is so much to be said about this extraordinary, gutsy, and brave woman. She was a nurse who then decided to become a top notch trauma and burn surgeon, because WHY NOT??? After medical school, surgical residency and a fellowship in Philadelphia, Barbara began work at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh in 1990. Barbara then went on to become Chair of the Burn and Trauma Dept. at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, then Director of Burns and Trauma at the University of Iowa Medical Center. She also volunteered her time and professional expertise in Bosnia during the war, as well as India, Nepal, and Zambia (and probably some other countries as well), in addition to Operation Safety Net (a wonderful program delivering medical care to the homeless on the streets of Pittsburgh). Barbara had a brilliant mind, many talents (including music, house renovation, needlework), a very generous heart, and a tremendous will to live life at its fullest. She was determined to see as much of the world as possible, and she pretty much did (and with gusto)!!! She had her Bucket List knowing that she would eventually move on from this life to another one. The world is a better place for what she gave to it. She will be very missed. Godspeed, Barbara. A celebration of life memorial will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City on July 18, 2015, 12:00 p.m. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Burn Association at ameriburn.org, or St. Florian Fire and Burn Foundation at stflorainfireandburnfoundation.com or through Allnutt Funeral Service, 650 W. Drake Road, Fort Collins, CO 80526, (970)482-3208. Please visit Barbara's online memorial at:
