Obituary: Jeffrey Ford Pittman

12/27/61 ~ 4/16/03

Jeff died peacefully in the arms of his loving wife at age 41 on April 16, 2003, in the home where he grew-up. Jeff was the forth generation of his family to be afflicted with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). He fought the battle valiantly for seven months receiving great strength from his personal Savior Jesus Christ.

Jeff was preceded in death by his mother, this past June, who also died from ALS.

Jeff was born in Thompson, Georgia on December 27, 1961, to Tobe Ambrose and Beverly Gene Ford Pittman. They moved back to Centerville, Utah in 1962, where he was raised on a farm and learned the importance of responsibility, a love for humanity, and the value of life. Jeff graduated from Viewmont High School in 1980.

Jeff had three passions in his life: God, family and country. Following his graduation he served a mission in Bolivia, where he first acquired his love for languages. He later graduated from Weber State University in 1988.

He served his country for 19 years in various capacities, the United States Army (1983 - 1991) and as an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1991 - 2003). His first assignment with the FBI was in New Mexico, followed by Puerto Rico, Salt Lake City and most recently, Virginia.

Jeff's magnetic personality, throughout his life, and his amazingly positive, up-beat attitude towards his illness has touched and inspired uncountable lives. Even up to his last hours, he never lost the mischievous twinkle in his eye. Three hours before his death, with no strength in his arms, he signaled to his sister to help him swat his wife's behind while she bent over to plug in a fan.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Vanessa Tarazon Pittman, two sons Thomas Jeffrey (T.J.) and Kenneth Michael Pittman. He considered T.J. and Kenny his "Legacy", his pride and joy. He is also survived by his father, Tobe Ambrose Pittman, his brother Tobe Lee (Melissa) Pittman and his family, and his sister Patricia Pittman Miller and her family.
