Marvin was my friend, I have not seen Marvin since those days but the summer of 77 was the greatest of "Stand By Me" days that boys could have in the summer, in the woods, in the creek. Marvin and I were cut from the same swatch of worn out, holey, faded demin. Long hairs the both, part hippy, explorer and naturalist.
I lived in Idlewild, a hop across the creek from Marvin's house filled with his parents worldly wonders from afar. The creek that lead to the wonderful tandem Black and Horseshoe lakes, natural paradises of National Geographic proportions from our perspective. This holy haven featured some of my first glimpses of Largemouth bass, Snapping turtles, Common water snakes and a host of many a creature to track and catch.
Neither of us fit in to other traditional popular roles at school, but we fit right in to woods. We would by hiking, biking, motorcycle or foot venture to were the wild things were, that we loved to catch. And catch we did, Blue tailed skink lizards, Marbled salamanders and Catfish one day and Black racer snake, Painted turtles and Bluegills the next...enough to make Steve Irwin proud.
Many treasured adventures began to fade my from my memory, now rekindled by the telling to my 10 year old son they linger longer to fuel the soul of a new adventurer.
Some of my favorite memories of teen years were shared with Marvin exploring the wild, he was friendly to all lucky enough to know him...and rarely did he laugh without a coyful blush, but it is his laugh that I will remember most.
