Tommy Mahar’s daughter posted the following on Facebook about her dad’s passing:

Hi, this is Tommy’s daughter Tanya ,
I know a lot of you have been wondering what happened to my dad .

My dad went into the hospital with a cold and swollen legs . He didn’t realize he had heart failure.

Doctors felt we could try some things to help him and he went through multiple surgeries. He got through all of them and still , it was not working . Through it all he kept a positive attitude and made the doctors and nurses laugh. They all loved him in there and were rooting for him.

He was then told this would be his last chance if he wanted it . It was going to be the biggest fight of his life . He would need an LVAD surgery . He knew With all the surgeries before it left him weak and not able to move and walk so going into this surgery the odds were all against him . He was very weak to begin with .

He looked all the doctors in the eye and said I want a chance to fight . I want to go down swinging. He had to convince 40 doctors to give him that chance . He did .

He never had solid ground to stand on . He hit every bump he could hit . he went through hell and through it all he fought until there was never left of him to fight .

I tried to give him every option the doctors would let me to keep him in the fight . But his body finally told us he couldn’t fight no more . For two months he fought.

My mom must have known he was tired . She was the love of his life and i know he is with her now and he can finally rest . She waited a long time for him and couldnt wait anymore .

we will be having the wake on Thursday 3-8 at Cartwright funeral home in Braintree . And Friday the funeral we are not sure what time exactly because we are still trying to figure things out but when I find out I will let you all know . I know many people are reaching out wondering what is going on so I just wanted to explain to all of you what he went through and what the plan was

He loved all of you and had so many great times with all of you . I only heard him speak of one person that was nasty to him . That person was angry at him for not retiring and not letting other people be able to move up . And that is the only person I know that was ever not nice to my dad . I don’t need to tell anyone who that person was he / she knows who they are .

But thank you to all of you for being there for my dad. He really had some great friends that truly cared about him and we appreciate all of you. He loved you all . He was the only person I know that could be there for all of us ( family ) didn’t miss anything we had going on through all the years and still be there for all of his work/ friends and he made it all look so easy , never complained .

I just wanted to say Thank you to all of you for bringing happiness / love to my dad ??he will always be watching over all of us shining some sunshine down on us .

Paul Viita and his personal trainer at Southside Restaurant yesterday. Paul is in town this week for his 55th Harvard reunion. I love getting together with him, albeit only every four years or so. Paul has been into painting the last ten years, and shared with me a couple of his favorite pastels.
