Diane Marler ((Lovgren))

Diane Marler-Lovgren of Shelton

Nov. 11, 1952 - June 24, 2007

Dianne Marie Marler-Lov-gren died on Sunday, June 24, at Saint Peter Hospital in Olympia of complications for treatment of leukemia. She was 54 and had lived in Shelton since 1974.

She was born November 11, 1952, in Bremerton to Melvin Marler and Arlene (Anderson) Sullivan. She graduated from high school at Oak Grove School in Vassalboro, Maine.

She married Brian Lovgren on January 5, 1985, in Bremerton.

Mrs. Marler-Lovgren worked for Qwest Communications/U.S. West/Pacific Northwest Bell, first as a cable splicer, than in the central office from June 4, 1978 until her death.

She held various other jobs over the years, including a stint at the Cub Tavern in Shelton in the early 1970s where she got to know all the locals. She also worked for Simpson Timber Company at Camp Govey, where her nickname was "Dynamite," and for the U.S. Forest Service.

She loved to cook and especially to feed people. Family and friends always were presented with an array of delicious morsels from her kitchen, and kids always left her house with pockets full of cookies, her family said.

She was a lover of animals, especially ones that needed help. She fed and cared for every stray dog she came upon and was known to carry a 50-pound of dog food in her phone truck to feed strays and pets during her workday.

The biggest event in her life was her reunion with the daughter she had given up for adoption. She was 17 when she gave birth to Deanna. She began a search in 1997 and a few months later, they were reunited and developed a very special relationship.

She was an avid skier who enjoyed annual winter trips to Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, with her family, as well as other annual ski trips with friends.

Fishing was one of her hobbies. She and Mr. Lovgren made many trips to Sekiu. She was always generous with the fish, including one return trip where a gas stop at Hoodsport became a salmon giveaway to several elderly folks she befriended while her husband was inside paying for the gas.

She and Mr. Lovgren also had five grandchildren and she made sure they learned to ski, swim, bike and cook.

Her father preceded her in death.

Surviving are husband Brian Lovgren of Shelton; daughter Deanna Merkatz of Kirkland; granddaughters Annabelle and Amanda Merkatz of Kirkland and Cassidy and Dillon Merkatz of San Antonio, Texas; grandson Shelby Merkatz of Kirkland; mother Arlene Sullivan of Silverdale; and brothers Randy and Lanny Marler.

Diane attended the 20th Reunion and wrote:  Right after graduation, I enrolled into Western Washington State College and moved to Shelton in 1974 after graduating.  I worked in the Olympic National Forest for 5 years and then went to work fo U.S. West, where I am presently a special services Central Office Tech.  I have been married 7 years to Brian and we enjoy snow skiing, salmon fishing, and marine biology.  My memory of '71 is my freshman summer quarter at Western.
