In Memory

Joe Zimmitti

This old photo of Joe came from Karl Smith.   "I am pretty sure it was either from our senior year or just after graduation. I think it was taken at Joe's house, but it may have been Richard Harvey's place. I do recall we were all puzzling over how to build some kind of electronic circuit at the time, possibly a voltage regulator for a power supply. I seem to recall we were trying to figure out how to get a (then brand new) integrated circuit chip to regulate and smooth an unregulated supply of 14 volts down to 12 volts. I suppose I kept the photo because it shows Joe as I've always thought of him; figuring out how to do something most people wouldn't even attempt. "

Joe had MS. He had it for 20 years, yet he tried to live as normal a life as possible. He didn’t sit home and feel sorry for himself. He was active in his community and politics. He was able to drive himself around in a special van, even though he also needed a motorized chair. When he joined our reunion committee in 2000, we all admired him for his determination to do whatever he could to help.

We were both involved in local politics, me in Raritan and Joe in Branchburg. I would always run into him at county events. I knew Joe since the 4th grade. He was one of the smartest guys I’ve ever known. As we prepare for the 40th, I can’t help but think about him. I miss him as a classmate and a friend.
