James lived about a block away fom me on west Galveston. We went to grade school together at Southside and Jr. High. I lost track of him in high school I believe he must have enlisted in early high school but I don't know for sure. My memories of him were that he was an excellant tether ball player. I measured my improvement by how close I could get to him before he would win. Later in Jr. High he and I and David Ash would skip school and stay at his little house where he lived with his Dad. I never saw his mother don't know if she was alive or not. His death was a shock as was W.C. Black another kid from our neighborhood. I can't remember If David Lucas had preceded him in dying in that old war. Kieth Barnett and Kenneth Rankin were my older brother's age.I think they both were brother Bob's age.It seems that Kieth Barnett had a younger sister but I'm not sure. Then of course Kenneth Rankin was an older brother of one our classmates,Brenda. Then there came Buddy Gainer. If my memory serves me, he died shortly after ariving in Viet Nam. I heard of his death not knowing that he had even been in the service. I remember we could not get into the church because of so many attendees. The only one that I didn't know was the very first one killed in action in that war, but I remember his name was Sammy Jones and the story I heard through older brothers was that he was killed in a tank battle. Whenever I can't remember the names of those seven young men I go by that monument which Honors them, to refresh my memory. I haven't had to do that in a long time.
