Richard Bass who died on Saturday,August 15th and who was a member of our class of 1961 and had been my friend since 1959, will be remembered fondly for many things including his great sense of humor, his vast knowledge of football, and his interest in charitable work for the Knights of Pythias. He was devoted to his wife Carol, who he lived with in Dumont, NJ. Richard had worked for the Post Office for many years and was retired. I remember him for his athletic ability at Castle Hill Pool, especially in tennis, and he was an expert bowler as well as playing for many years on a softball team. Most of all , he was a good friend. He was always willing to go anywhere, was quick with a joke and a laugh, was compassionate when he needed to be , and also occasionally served as my UNOFFICIAL psychiatrist. He was devoted to his parents and sister, and served his country in the Army during the 1960's. He was good at arranging dates for friends, and was quite willing, before his marriage of course, to be the recipient of a blind date arrangement. Richard was a great partner to have at a football game because he was able to cram into his mind all kinds of statistics, and history of teams and players, which he was happy to share with anyone sitting nearby. He may have missed his calling as a sports analyst for the NFL.
He never tired of helping people, taking a part time job after retirement as a school crossing guard in his community, helping out at a Salvation Army thrift shop, and staying active in his union assisting members' issues. I will miss this fine friend, who is no longer suffering from the illnesses that beset him. May his family, including the grandchildren he loved, as well as the dog he adored, be comforted.
