Sue was my absolute best friend - my very first best friend. The realtor who helped Sue's family move to Bronxville contacted my parents to ask if I'd invite Sue to a movie to help her acclimate to her new community. We became inseperable from that day on, in the summer before 7th grade. We stayed practically attached at the hip through senior year of HS and remained in touch until not long before she passed on. These, as we all know, were formative years. She and I learned about frienship together. We shared the challenges of navigating middle school, traveling (from Williamsburg to Warwick), about guys, cheerleading, football dances, the reformed church, how to babysit Hollister (her much younger sister), very big hair curlers, how to use make-up, many slumber parties, lots and lots of laughter, and an incredible love for each other. Cheers to my wonderful best friend!  - Nancy Routh

Agreed.  One of my favorite professors once observed, "intimacy is the currency of friendship."

Free time is the greenhouse where intimacy can take root and blossom.  It's a commodity that disappears for most of us after college, which is why developing close friendships after school, outside your immediate family, so rare.

Old friendships have the deepest roots.  Treasure them and nurture them, for even more than family I think close friendships are what sustain us.
