Lynn Takats (Leavitt)

Details for Maura Lynn Takats Leavitt

Nov 20, 2019

Maura "Lynn" Leavitt passed on to a better place on November 16, 2019, after a long difficult battle with cancer. She fought the disease with the same gentleness, grace and dignity, which she displayed throughout her life.

Born to Joseph and Hermina Takats in Buffalo, New York, on March 7, 1946, she received a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Elmira College, in New York, and a Master's Degree in Education from George Washington University, in Washington, D.C. A lifelong educator, she established residential youth drug programs, taught inmates in the Arlington County, Virginia, detention facility, taught alternative high school programs, and for the majority of her career taught various elementary school grades in the Arlington County public schools. After moving to The Villages in 2012, Lynn's love of working with children led her to tutor at Wildwood Elementary School for the past six years through Tutors for Kids, a local non-profit. She also served on the Board of Tutors for Kids for five years.

Lynn is survived by her loving husband of more than 35 years, Henry "Hank" Leavitt; two brothers, Dr. Joseph Takats III of Grand Island, New York, and Lee Takats of Portland, New York; and, five nephews and one niece.

In retirement, in addition to working with children, Lynn loved traveling, gardening, working out and golf, and getting together with friends.

A memorial service to honor Lynn will be held at a future date with details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations to Cornerstone Hospice, The Villages Hospice House, would be appreciated.

REST IN PEACE, LYNN

Lynn will be remembered by all who knew her as a person we all wanted to know. Her grace, personality and beauty were far beyond skin deep. While I never met Hank please accept my condolences. Your lovely wife is in a far better place now but, hopefully, with all the wonderful memories she shared with her many many friends over the years. Until we meet again!

Lynn has been a constant friend of mine since 5th grade. We were "Besties" as theycall it today.  I've been in contact with her all through this ordeal and talked and texted her as often as she could.  There are no words to describe what a wonderful person Lynn was.  The last few years we liked to meet at the Seneca-Niagara Casino where she and Hank always stayed when they came to meet with her brothers.  Lynn and Hank loved to gamble and so did Tom and I and we'd also have dinner. She was so much fun!

In one of our last conversations Lynn said she had 99.9% of everything she wanted in life. She was a beautiful person with a zest for life and a special energy.  She loved Hank, her friends and brothers,                The Villages, loved to travel and play golf and talk politics.  Lynn was also a generous benefactor to Kenmore West.  Tom and I will miss her a lot.

Lynn was the definition of "nice". While I lost contact with her after high school, it's good to know from other comments that she lived a happy and productive life. You've earned your rest, Lynn.

Lynn and I were friends in school. I remember sharing several classes with her.

As a board member of the Kenmore West Alumni Foundation, I can attest to her generosity toward others. She was a substantial donor to the Foundation for many years. Because of her consistant contributions, countless deserving West seniors have attended 4-year, 2-year or trade schools they may not have attended otherwise. All Kenmore West alumni can be proud of her devotion to her school and to her funding of further education.

So sorry to learn of the passing of yet another member of the class of 64. Lynn was a very vivacious, kind, friendly person. With a class as large as 64 you don't remember many but I certainly remember her. She seems to have lead a wonderful life cut too short. Rest in peace Lynn. You made a positive impression on many. God Bless.
