Wonnie Gilchrist (Jordan) - Class Of 1944

NEWTON GROVE - Ms. Wonnie Gilchrist Jordan, 88, formerly of Fayetteville, peacefully met the Lord with her family by her side on Tuesday, June 30, 2015.

Wonnie's life was characterized by her service to God and others. She trusted Christ as her Savior at a young age, and trusted and lived for Him all her life. A sweeter, Godlier example of the Christian life would be hard to find. Her maiden name was Gilchrist, which means "servant of Christ," a very fitting description of her life. Wonnie was a retired nurse. The fruit of the Spirit was very evident in her life, from her gentleness in nursing her patients, to her steadfast faith in God, and love for her Savior, her family, and her neighbors. She was humble, thankful, gracious, hospitable, giving, kind, beautiful, and had a meek and quiet spirit, and thought of others ahead of herself.

We are so thankful for the Lord's blessing and faithfulness in giving us such a mother and grandmother. She was not fearful, but quietly trusting and perfectly at peace. Jesus said unto her, "I am the resurrection and the life: He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die ." (John 11:25-26)

Wonnie is predeceased by husbands, the Rev. Edward Jordan and Gilbert Humphrey; parents, Nannie and Isaac Gilchrist; sisters, Maxine Gilchrist, Elaine Womack and Ina Mae Womack.

She is survived by daughters, Martha Berry (James), Mary Ballance (James), Ann Dunning (Pat), and Caroline Ivey (Mike); 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Yvonne Casto, Clive Thomas (Ray), Laverne Starr (Harvey), Dot Johnson (Ronald), Peggy Smith (Lewis), Faye Porter (Henderson), Brenda Gilchrist, and Gail Sloane (Bill); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 3, 2015, at Oak Grove Baptist Church at 1 p.m., by Dr. Rick Jefferds and Pastor Will Thomas. Interment will follow in Cross Creek Cemetery in Fayetteville.

The family received friends at the church prior to the funeral, from noon to 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Baptist Children's Home, P. O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27360.
