Sam Burgess

LINDEN — Sam Cameron Burgess, 88, of Linden, NC, passed away in his residence on Sunday, February 14, 2016.

He was a veteran of the Korean war. He was a member of Layton Chapel Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 302, Harnett County Shrine Club, Anderson Creek Ruritan Club, and Flat Branch Fire Department, having served as its Fire Chief for over forty years. He was a retired construction superintendent.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean Burgess; parents, James C. and Mary Lee Burgess; and brothers, J. C. Burgess and Kenneth Burgess.

He is survived by his daughter, Sammie Rhodes and husband, Joe of Linden; Lisa Upchurch, who was like a daughter; brothers, Lindsey, Winford, Clifton, and George Burgess and sister Lucille McLamb.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Layton Chapel Baptist Church in Spring Lake with Rev. Steve Swagger officiating. Interment with Masonic rites following in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
