Kathy died when a set of dual wheels flew off a container truck and crushed the car she was driving on Interstate 5 in March of 1998.
I have many happy memories of walking with Kathy to Sunset and Highline talking nonstop all the way. She was a cheerful, kind friend, a talented seamstress, and creative.
Kathy and I lived across from each other at the top of hill on 160th that was later removed for the airport. We were attending Sunnydale Elementary School then. We saw our first "dirty" word on the back of the stop sign at Des Moines/160th; we couldn't figure that one out. During the summer we picked raspberries and blackberries around the airport to sell. We would eat green apples and twirl on the swings her Dad made in the orchard . . . and get sick. After dusk we would sneak up to the airport -- at that time there were no fences around it -- and we would lay down in the middle of the north end of the runway and watch the planes take off and land over us. (The good 'ol days.) I loved going over to her house -- she once had a parakeet who would join us for breakfast. She would get him to sit on the edge of the maple syrup jug, then one day he fell into the jug, and her Mom got very upset with us. The bird was okay, but we couldn't stop laughing, and were abruptly dismissed.
We went on to Sunset Jr. High, then Highline together. Kathy was such a sweet and fun spirit and most of my fondest childhood memories are being with her. I will never forget her.
