ANELIA V. MELCHER, 82, of Park Avenue, a retired registered nurse, died yesterday at Edmund Place Health Center, East Providence.

Born in Hudson, Mass., a daughter of the late John and Valeria (Cheznelovich) Grigas, she lived in New Jersey before moving to Barrington in 1993. An Army veteran of World War II, serving as a first lieutenant, she was a graduate of the former Peter Bent Brigham Hospital School of Nursing, Boston.

Mrs. Melcher had worked as a nurse at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York, and the former Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now, Brigham & Women's Hospital), Boston.

She leaves a son, John James Steel, and a grandson, John R. Steel, both of Barrington. She was the mother of the late George Melcher and the sister of the late John and Adolf Grigas.

A graveside service will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson. Burial will follow.
