John Stene

After leaving the Academy, I graduated from Augustana College in 1962 with a BA and taught mathematics at the Academy from 1962-1963 and Gregory High School from 1963-1967. I lost my right leg in January 1961 due to osteogenic sarcoma with surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Linda and I were married August 1965. Further education included a Master in Natural Sciences (1968) and a Doctorate in Education (1979) from USD. I retired in 1999 after thirty-one years on the faculty of Mount Marty College as Chairman of the Natural Sciences Division and the Department of Mathematics.

We spent 27 summers at Spruce Lake RV Park in Estes Park, Colorado, before retirement. After retirement we spent three and a half years full-time RVing in our Sea Hawk fifth wheel. We continue to RV each summer with our 11DB S&S Pickup Camper which is mounted on our Ford F-350 dually diesel.

In January 2003 we moved into our new home in The Villages, Florida. I enjoy participation in the Computer and Educators Retired Clubs. Linda enjoys ceramics, line dancing, the Civil War Club, Red Hatters, and local woman's groups. We serve on the Board of Directors of the Educators Retired Club. We are involved with our church and deliver meals to the home bound. I enjoy creating piano music CDs on our new Yamaha Clavinova electronic grand piano.

While at Augustana Academy I especially enjoyed our Senior Class trip and the visit of Governor Joe Foss. My favorite teachers were Reverend Harlan Norem, Catherine Ness, and Mark Rostvold.
