FREDERICKTOWN: Janet Marie Shull Mizer went home to be with her Lord and Savior on the Twenty-sixth day of December 2018 She was 71 years of age.
She was born in Mercy Hospital in Tiffin, Ohio on July 13, 1947, on her mother’s 35th birthday, to parents Charles Russell Shull and Mazie Marie (Fleck) Shull of Carey, Ohio. After Janet graduated from Carey High School in Carey, Ohio with the class of 1965, she attended Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green Ohio. She taught at Wood Lane School in Bowling Green, Ohio while she worked to finish her degrees in Elementary and Special Education in1972 and then attended extended studies at Toledo University and Asland University. Janet retired from teaching after teaching at the Mount Vernon Developmental Center and New Hope School, and substitute taught for the Mount Vernon City School District.
On August 18, 1973, Janet married John L. Mizer of Walhonding and they raised two sons. They were married 26 years before they divorced. Janet worked diligently to create a warm and loving home for her family. She could take anything ordinary and make it extraordinary…with a few simple ingredients she could cook a delicious meal, take a box mix cake and a can of frosting and make beautiful cakes of all designs for her sons and grandchildren, scouts, and sons’ music recitals. And with four plain walls she could create and decorate an inviting home. Everything Janet touched turned wonderful warm and inviting.
In her spare time, she took pleasure in sewing crafts, making Halloween costumes, and organizing parties and making special treats as room mother every year for her sons’ classrooms.
Janet wore many hats in life……..wife, mother, teacher and tireless volunteer. She was a Cub Scout leader, Boy Scout troop treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, church youth music director, Room mother at Dan Emmett Elementary School, Secretary, Treasurer, and President of the Mount Vernon Middle School where she ran their successful magazine and candy sales. She was a supporter and volunteer for the Mount Vernon Orchestra OPUS for 13 years and was Secretary of the Mount Vernon Band Booster for 6 years and sat on many committees there, even after her sons graduated high school.
She was known for her fund raising abilities. It was kind of a standing joke that when Janet walked in the door the store owners would start to laugh, ask her what hat she had on today, and question what she was asking donations for now. She even received donations from the Synder Funeral Home when she was the representative for the Smoke Free Class of 2000 for 12 years. That might seem odd to some, but she knew her causes were worthwhile and wasn’t afraid to ask anyone even though she was basically a quiet shy woman that couldn’t say “No” when asked to volunteer.
Janet was considered a master teacher by the Superintendents where she taught school. If she has a legacy to leave it is she believed in children……..her children, her grandchildren, ALL children. They all needed love and nurturing, and she hoped that each and everyone of them that crossed her path in life felt the love and caring she had for them to be happy, safe, and successful and to feel good about themselves.
Janet had a great love for her children. She patiently waited in school parking lots as her children attended band practices, fair choir rehearsals, and sports practice for countless hours.
She was a wonderful cook and could often be found canning or tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She also enjoyed riding in parades with her husband in the decorated wagons pulled by their beloved teams of Belgian horses named Dick and Dan and Percherons named Trixie and Scott where they won numerous awards. But above all, Janet cherished time spent with family and friends—especially with her grandchildren!
Her family and friends will miss her infectious smile, perfect sense of humor and her hard-working spirit. She spent her whole life looking after others and had the natural ability to put people right at ease. Everyone went to her for advice for they knew she would always give the best. She was the glue that held her family together and her unconditional love will never be forgotten.
Janet is survived by her son John ‘Jay” Mizer and his sons Marcus Aaron and Lucas Andrew Mizer of Granville, Ohio and son Jamie Russell Mizer and his son Byron James and daughter Brandalynn Mae Mizer , and the father of her children John L. Mizer of Gambier, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents Russell and Mazie Shull, her Maternal Grandparents and Philomena Collet, Paternal Grandparents Agnes and Joseph Shull, and two still born babies, Charles Pride Mizer and Mandy Marie Mizer, a wonderful woman who took Janet under her wing upon her mother’s death, Troas Dunn, and numerous Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, December 31, 2018 at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Rd., Mount Vernon. A private burial will take place in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey.

It is so sad to lose yet another classmate from our 1965 Class. Janet was a real jewel. I don't know anybody who didn't like her. She was a friend to all. Janet had the sweetest personality and was a great friend to me. She will be sorely missed by many.

Janet was the best of friends. She was such fun in school. It is crazy but several days before her passing, I was remembering the night we did a talent thing for Y-Teens or GAA. Connie, Janet, and I were Peter, Paul, and Mary. Janet was Mary and I think Connie was Peter. We had so much fun practicing for the song, "Blowin' in the Wind".
Janet's musical abilities far out-shone my own. Janet and I were both in the alto section of chorus and stood side by side. I remember one time Janet telling me to just "mouth" the words rather than sing. I was that BAD!!! Of course, Miss Dickey (Mrs. Blackburn) took anyone who tried out so I was there. Ha
Janet's mom was so sweet. She actually bought a house and moved to Bowling Green so Janet could attend classes and live at home. Mazie invited me to their home a few times when I was at Bowling Green. It was good to be in a real house and away from the dorm for a few hours and also to have fresh homemade cookies. What a treat!

Janet will always be remembered with love - and she was a special friend (and help) to me over the years. She was a constant, generous source of class news and updates for our website, which was an enormous help. Life without her help and influence will not be easy, but the memory of her smile will be a constant reminder of the happiness she brought us.
