June 14, 1978 Hopkins Youth Died of May 27 Street Crash Injuries sustained in a May 28 accident on Cassville Main Street were fatal to Johnnie R. Hopkins, 18. The rural Cassville youth died at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 8 in a Springfield Hospital where he had been a patient since the early morning wreck at 12th and Main. He suffered massive head and internal injuries in the two-car wreck just five day after his graduation from Cassville high school. Johnny Hopkins Born April 3, 1960 in Monett, he was a lifetime resident of Cassville. The family lived in the Hilltop community, south of town. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Geraldine Hopkins, Cassville; two sisters, Miss Glenda Hopkins and Mrs. Debbie Miekley, both of Cassville and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Hopkins, Cassville. Services were conducted Saturday at Williamson Chapel in Cassville. Burial was in Corinth Cemetery. Hopkins had been listed in extreme critical condition during his hospitalization. Family members said his life was virtually maintained by life support equipment at the hospital's intensive care facility. Statistically, Hopkins becomes the third traffic fatality on county highways this year. His was the third vehicle death in Cassville since 1955. Twenty-three years ago another Cassville youth lost his life, also on Main Street in the north part of town. Three years ago a 91-year-old Carthage resident died on South Main after apparently suffering a heart attack.
