Shelly was a friend. She was smart and welcoming and perhaps the most musically gifted person I’ve known. Always smiling, and with a pretty odd sense of humor–though, she may have guarded that just a bit. She was spiritually rich and had an uncommon sense of kindness and decency. Shelly was a treasure, and losing her so early seems to prove just how indifferent and unfair it all really is.

I have a fond memory of her singing “You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” complete with all of these fun, 1920’s vocal flourishes. She just killed it. Another vivid memory is of her performing “I Sing the Body Electric” from the musical Fame. Such a powerful, hopeful anthem. And it suited her absolutely.

I’ve been thinking about Shelly recently and then just ran across this newspaper clipping from middle school. I took that as a sign to share it with you all, as well as a little bit of what I remember of this remarkable classmate.
