John Scott was a true American hero.  He won the Silver Star medal as an officer on the USS Liberty in 1967.  Isreali forces shot up the ship in a case of "mistaken identity" killing many sailors and almost sinking the ship.  John's son, Jim Scott, published it all in his book The Attack on the Liberty.  I am proud to have known John.  Rest in peace, classmate.

John sat behind me in, I believe,in World History class.  When turning in his test papers he would always sign: "I'd rather be flying".... Sorry to hear he has passed away.  Blessings to his family.

John and I were in the same English class one semester.  He impressed me with his obvious kind soul plus his genuine smile, which evidenced his sense of humor.  He was soft spoken and modest.  I read his obituary online (Legacy.com) and learned that he was student body president the first year Charlotte College became UNC-Charlotte.  No surprise.  How sad that Alzheimers robbed him and his loved ones of years of a longer and full life.  His son's book about his accomplishments is a must read.  My deepest sympathies to John's family.

Very sad to hear about John's passing.  I remember John joking with me when we were both seniors ar UNCC aout his upcoming assignment with the navy as the Damage Control Officer of an intellegence gathering ship stationed in the Mediterranean.  He remarked that he was more likely to get a sunburn than shot at.  LIttle did he know.  John was a class act and the Silver Star he received was a testament to his character.  I offer my deepest condolences to his family.

Very sorry to hear about John. We were good friends while working on our 1953 Chevys. I did not know of John's military service until I read two books about the attack on the USS Liberty.  As the damage control officer, his job was to keep the ship afloat. He did a outstanding job and won the Silver Star for his efforts. I was with Naval Intelligence during that time and it was not " a mistaken" event that killed 36 American Sailors. Read the book "Body of Secrets" by Bannon if you want the answer.

I am so sorry for your loss.  In 1967 while John was surviving on the USS Liberty, I was pregnant and thinking of my own husband who was somewhere under an ocean on a nuclear sub.  I wish we had known John and his family years later in our retirement.  Blessings on your family and comfort in His care.
