I met Gaye in the 7th grade at Sedgefield, and she has been a friend since then. Gaye was intelligent, caring, and was so brave in dealing with her illness. And she was absolutely the best person for keeping up with every person that she knew. I will miss her!

I attended Park Road and Sedgefield with Gaye and enjoyed knowing her through our MPHS years.  I am sad that she lost her battle with her lung illness, and sad because she must have suffered greatly.  I have fond memories.  I wish for peace for her family.

I think sometimes the best way to remember someone is to share a one-of-a-kind story. I lived on the seventh floor of a dorm at UNC-G. I had rescued an abandoned cat with no where to take her but my room. Of course that was "illegal" and until Spring break came she was stuck in my room, with a litter box in front of my closet, our door always shut. I won't share the fabrication I had to share with the dorm mother who was told I might have a cat in my room. But that cat saved my vision by jumping up on a dresser right before a ceramic small coffee pot blew. Kathy Davis and I got a ride home (to Charlotte) with Gaye's mom and Gaye. It was a rainy day and trying to calm a fidgety kitten under a raincoat for 7 floors was not easy. We probably had made it 50 miles before the kitten did diarrhea all over me and my favorite raincoat. Gaye's mother pulled into a gas station and I realized there was no way to salvage my smelly raincoat. The kitten was rinsed in the sink, my coat left in the trash and being as good a sport as you can imagine, both Gaye and her mother stuck their powder compacts beneath their noses the rest of the trip. Kathy's mother took the kitten and neither of us were offered a ride home again. Gaye laughed weeks later but it was an awful ride for the kitten and all of us.
Gaye was a very smart woman and obviously, with a delayed sense of humor, forgave us. I will miss her and always remember her fondly.- Carol King Butler
