Cindy and I dated all through high school, but we drifted apart when she went to UNC-C and I took off for Brown. Cindy found a new circle of friends at college that accepted her at face value and did not know her history with cancer while she was in junior high at McClintock. I found a bitter truth in the old saying: "if you love something, let it go." Then, late in junior year, we reconnected for the following summer, even making plans to be together after college graduation. Sadly, her cancer reappeared early in her senior year, and she would not survive it the second time.
