Paula died in April of 2005 at the age of 51. She suffered from a brain hemorrhage due to a car accident. Fiive years earlier she contacted bacterial mennigitis. She was in a coma for several months; when she awoke she was deaf and blind, but her memory was as sharp as ever. Paula stayed positive and was a very stong fighter. Learning Braille enabled her to communicate with the outside world. She had a computer that allowed her to type emails in Braille; the recipient got the message in English, but the response came back to her in Braille.
Paula was my best friend from 1st to 12th grade. We had many fun times together including sleepovers, Girl Scouts, summers at Camp Occoneechee, Young Life, Candy Striping at Presbyterian Hospital, etc. Although we never lived in the same city again, we remained close. After graduating from Furman Phi Beta Kappa, Paula moved to Tallahassee, FL where she met and maried Doug. They had one daughter, Elizabeth who has grown up to be a very fine young lady. Paula is greatly missed by her family and friends (including me).
Cathie, I'm sorry to hear this sad story, but what an amazing recovery Paula made! I remember you at Presbyterian, candy-striping! Was Paula there at the same time? Memory fails me! Hope to see you at the reunion. Thanks for sharing this about your best friend.
