Jack Homer Sink Born October 1928 Died March 2016
Jack Homer Sink CHARLOTTE - Coach Sink, 87, longtime teacher and coach, entered the church triumphant and the eternal presence of Almighty God. Jack was born October 30, 1928, in Thomasville, NC, son of the late Homer Clifton and Ada Hinkle Sink. Jack, a 1950 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne University, lettered four years in both football and baseball, and was the manager of the Bears basketball team. He was inducted into the LR Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. After college, Jack served in the United States Army. He earned his Masters degree from UNC Greensboro in 1957. Jack began his teaching and coaching career at Kings Mountain High School and went to Myers Park in 1954 for 30 years before retiring in 1985. He led his teams to over 300 wins, seven conference titles, one state runner up in 1958 and one State Championship in 1970. In honor of his accomplishments, Myers Park named its baseball field after him in 1995. He was very proud of that and for his entire life he continued to attend games and support the MP baseball teams from "his spot on the hill". He was a loyal Lenoir-Rhyne fan and also a big Clemson Tiger fan. Jack supported baseball at all levels-from youth leagues to Babe Ruth to American Legion. His love for the game of baseball is known all over. He was the first president of the NC Baseball Coaches Assoc. and was recently inducted into their Hall of Fame. Coach Sink's years of dedication to schools, teams, and community touched many lives and everyone who had contact with Jack probably has a heart-warming story to tell. Jack was known for his "gift of gab" and always said if he hadn't been a teacher and coach he would have been a newspaper writer. He always loved to read and write as well as talk, and was always faithful in sending great notes and cards for any occasion. It seems that everyone knew Coach Sink. He always enjoyed the chance to reconnect. Jack was a devoted Christian and loved his church and church family. He and his wife, Ann, were charter members of Christ Lutheran Church and he was a faithful member of their Intercessors group. The family is especially grateful for his friend, Hans Teich, who visited every week when Jack could no longer attend church. Also, the family thanks all those who loved and cared for Jack with a special thanks to children Brenda, Jack, and Becky. Jack was a proud father and grandfather and for his entire life "Granddaddy" attended practically every family event. For this his family was so appreciative. Jack is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann. They met at Carolina Beach and she was always his number one fan. He has four children-Cathy Neill (Rob), Carol Tucker (Kirk), Brenda Smith (Brick) and Jack (Becky); grandchildren Doug Neill (Rachael), Brian Neill (Emily), Drew Neill (Angie), Logan Smith (Jessie), Courtney Sink, Dustin and Hunter McAfee, and Josh Wilkes; great-grandchildren Lily Neill, Elle and Grace Neill, Scarlett Neill, Violet and Knox Smith and Kennedy Wilkes. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Pat Sink and granddaughter Jessica Sink Wilkes. A service to celebrate Jack's life will be held on Thursday, March 31, at 11:00 AM at Christ Lutheran Church, 4519 Providence Rd., Charlotte. There will be a reception following the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice or to The Mustang Club at MPHS for a scholarship in memory of Coach Sink. These contributions should be mailed to MPHS Mustang Club, 2400 Colony Rd., Charlotte, NC, 28209, and designated Coach Sink Scholarship. J.B. Tallent Funeral Service is handling arrangements for the Sink family.
