Carolyn LaFon Rader, 86, of Charlottesville, Va. died Tuesday, August 22, 2023 after a short battle with lymphoma. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Spencer Rader. Born in Pearisburg, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William Madison LaFon and Margaret Irene LaFon.

Carolyn attended McIntire High School and graduated from Albemarle High School in 1954.

Carolyn received her Bachelors Degree in Education from Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio. She taught Home Economics and Physical Education before getting her Masters Degree in Social Work after which she was the Director of five homes which housed adults with developmental disorders within the organization of Evangelical Homes of Detroit, Michigan.

Survivors include her two daughters Jennifer Giacalone (Joby) and Beth Rader and two grandchildren Sydney Giacalone and Gabe Giacalone (Savannah Ownby).

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses who cared for her in the last two months, Dr. Kimberly Dowdell, Dr. Emily Ayers and Dr. Indumathy Varadarajan, nurse Rachel, nurse Camilla, Hospice of the Piedmont and our dear friend Janice McCann.

A memorial service will be held 11:00am Saturday August 26, 2023 at St. Mark Lutheran Church 100 Alderman Road Charlottesville VA.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran World Relief.

Arrangements are being handled by Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
