In Memory

Samuel Nelson Kirby - Class Of 1955

Nelson Samuel "Sam" Kirby, 84, of Waynesboro, passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at his home. Born on June 27, 1937, in Albemarle County, he was a son of the late Percy Wilbur and Mary Wade Kirby.

Sam lived a typical country life in Batesville, Va., until graduating from Albemarle High School when he joined the U.S. Navy. After traveling the world during his service in the Navy, he returned home to various odd jobs and the chance meeting of the love of his life, Ruth Ann Beverly on July 4, 1959. They were married four months later and enjoyed 62 years of marriage. In 1962, Sam embarked on his 37 year career at E.I. DuPont Co. in Waynesboro. Sam was proud of his tenure at DuPont and retired in 1999 as a machinist, a vocation that suited him well. Sam was as he called himself "A jack of all trades, a master of none." There wasn't anything he couldn't do if he put his mind to it. Sam never met a stranger, never had an enemy and was well liked by all.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Anne (Beverly) Kirby and sister, Genevieve Quada of Va.

Sam is survived by his only child, Theresa Hoffman and husband, Bill; grandsons, Jake Hoffman and wife, Denise, and Tommy Hoffman; great-grandchildren, Samantha (his name sake), Jaxon, Raelynn, and Kolton Hoffman; brother, Calvin Kirby of Utah; and sister, Shirley Simpson of S.C.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at Augusta Memorial Park, 1775 Goose Creek Road, Waynesboro. All who plan to attend are asked to meet directly at the cemetery.

There will be no formal viewing or visitation at the funeral home.

The family would like to give a special heartfelt thank you to Jenny Yancey for everything she has done for Sam and their family through his illness.
