Virginia Platz (Adams)

Virginia Platz Adams, "Ginny", a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away on May 15, 2024, at the age of 93, from complications related to Parkinson's disease.

Born on March 3, 1931, in New York City, Ginny grew up in Broad Channel and Cambria Heights. She graduated from Our Lady of Wisdom Academy and went on to earn a degree in Mathematics from Beaver College (now Arcadia University), where she was an active member of the swim team and modern dance group. Her career in education began with teaching math in the public schools of Secaucus, NJ; continuing at Wesley Junior College in Dover, DE; and finally at Albemarle High School in Virginia.

Ginny was married to Col. William H. Adams II, "Bill," whose career in the U.S. Air Force took their family across the country - from Delaware to Virginia, Hawaii, Alabama, Illinois, and back to Virginia. She embraced the adventures of military life with curiosity and resilience, nurturing her family while also pursuing her artistic passions. Ginny earned a Master's degree in Art from the University of Hawaii and became a certified Master of Ikebana (Sogetsu School). She later taught art at Montgomery Academy and Albemarle High School.

Her creativity was a lifelong joy, expressed through her weaving, basket-making, flower arranging, drawing, and watercolor painting. She was an active member of the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild and exhibited her work in shows across the state and region. She also had a keen eye for antiques and loved hosting gourmet dinner clubs.

More than anything, Ginny was devoted to the people - and dogs - she loved. Her warmth, thoughtfulness, and gracious hospitality were constants in the lives of her family and friends. Her guiding motto, "Better spoiled than neglected," reflected her generous spirit and attentive heart.

Ginny is survived by her daughter, Virginia "Ginger" Adams Schwarz, and her husband, Paul Schwarz; her son, William "Bill" H. Adams III, and his wife, Jenny Koster; her grandchildren, Austin and Julie Schwarz (and Julie's husband, Shyam Raman); Theo and Henry Adams; and her great-grandchild, Leo Raman. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, William H. Adams II; and by her parents, Amelia and Lincoln Platz.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to her devoted caregivers Martha Walton, Tammy Jackson, Sophia Banks, and special friend Libby Sipe.

A celebration of Ginny's life will be held on July 19th at 1 p.m., at the Rock Chapel at Church of Our Saviour, followed by a reception in the Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA.
