Jim and I spent New Years Eve 1968 crusing around from bar to bar in my Austin Healey. We both looked older and got away with no one asking for ID. At one point, very late into the night, we got stopped by the police and asked to step out of the car. We were both half in the bag and Jim was cool as could be as the police questioned and searched us. They knew we were drunk. I was driving. Then all of a sudden they got an important call and yelled to us "Stay right here!" as they screeched into a u-turn and drove away. James started laughing out loud "Yeah, right!" he yelled. "We'll stay right here!" and he jumped in the passenger seat of my Healey before I could run around the car. That pretty much ended the night for us, but it is a night that I will never forget. I know exactly where they stopped us; on Vanowen, across the street from the police department.
