Cherrie's husband, Ken let us know she passed away from non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver while waiting for a transplant. She died on 4-22-22. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in March, 2022.
I first met Cherrie at Sutter Jr High where we were in the FHA club (Future Homemakers of America) together with others interested mostly in sewing. I remember working on a project with her sewing bibs for the residents of a mental health facility in Lompoc. She was a talented seamstress as well as a kind, thoughtful person.
Cherrie was a Girl Scout, I was a Camp Fire Girl. She was really good at math, I was good at English. She was cheerful and optimistic, I was fearful and gloomy. But we were best friends in junior high and high school. She baked me the most hilarious birthday cake I’ve ever seen. She was a conservative, I am a liberal. She went to Ohio State, I went to UC Santa Cruz. But we kept in touch. When there was a flood or an earthquake, she was the first to call. When there was a fire near her, I’d call to make sure she was okay. In the end, though, when I knew she was really sick, I should have dropped everything and gone to see her, and I didn’t. I regret that. We didn’t see each other often but it was comforting to know she was still there. Now she’s gone, and I miss her. She was a good friend in the days when a good friend was the most important thing in the world. I’m so grateful to have known her.
I'm So sorry to hear of Cherrie's passing. She's definitely gone too young . My prayers go out to her family and especially to her husband . What a blessing that they celebrated their 50th anniversary just the month before . Cherrie was always fun and thoughtful. We had several classes together and I remember her as a good friend able to understand differences and respect them.
