I've tried to write about Malcolm several times, but there's just no way to express the sadness I feel when I realize he's no longer with us. He was a good friend, a brilliant, funny, sweet, unique individual who had so much more to offer the world than he ever had a chance to contribute. I miss you Malcolm. Lots. - Sally
I knew Malcolm Short (and his brother Scott) through elementary to high school as well as attending the same church as Malcolm's family. We went on many church trips together and I remember Malcolm led a "Peter, Paul, and Mary" type group---usually playing guitar or piano( It was the late 60's). I remember Malcolm composing music just sitting at a piano. I suspect he was a musical genius because I am not aware that he had much formal musical training---he just had an ear for music. I am sorry we lost Malcolm to the turbulent 70's for we really do not know what he might have accomplished....he could have been a great talent.
I first met Malcolm at Northside Junior High School, and continued to know him in high school. We were in the band together at both schools. As others have said, his musical talents were impressive. One summer, Malcolm had the idea of forming a band and trying to get gigs at local establishments. Not having his talent or self-confidence, I had my doubts. But I did agree to join him on the trombone, and I went with him in search of work. Although we didn't succeed at that, I remember him as a good friend, and his death devastated me.
Malcolm and I grew up in the same neighborhood and were good friends at Normal Park. We played at each others house many times. We grew apart at Northside and City, but we were still good friends. I have a lot of good memories of those younger days.
I too have felt close to Malcolm, just about all my life. I knew him from elementary school forward. I believe he was even in my Kindergarten class. I always felt comfortable around him, and in saying that, I mean, we were good friends. He has always been there. I will miss him. To his family, I am sorry for your emptiness in losing him.

I remember Malcolm very well. He was a self collected and level individual. Much mature and beyond those days of our youth. He would have done well!!
