Mary Frances Lane-Ingram

When I got out of school I went to work at Value Fair Department Store on Brainerd Road. A friend of mine introduced me to a fellow named Jimmy Scallia. We dated for several years before we married. We were married for almost a year when he was killed. We did not have children together. After several months I went to work for an insurance company. I worked there for about a year and then went to work at J.C. Penneys.

A fellow named Jerry that I grew up with in church at the Salvation Army was home from leave from the Air Force because his mother had died. He was only going to be home for a month before leaving for Vietnam. We begin to date while he was home and he asked me to marry him. We decided to wait until he got home from Vietnam. We were married September 17, 1967. Jerry received orders to go to McDill Airforce Base in Tampa, Florida. We had our first child, Billy, while we lived there. Jerry didn't reenlist, so we moved back to Chattanooga. We had our second child, Lori. I was a stay at home mother until my children went to school. We joined the Salvation Army and went to church there when our children were growing up. I went to work for the school system so I could be home in the afternoon with my kids. I worked for Tyner High School, managed the cafeteria at Chickamauga Elementary and also worked for Howard High School. During the summers, I worked for Red Food Store and cooked for church camps. A neighbor of mine told me about a place called Little Debbie in Collegedale that was hiring. All I knew about the place was that they made Little Debbie cookies and yes, even now, you can't eat just one. I was hired there in June of 1990 and am still there. My first job was to sit on a stool and watch the cookies go by and take off any that didn't look good. I did that for about 9 months and was so bored I started asking around for another job. I was told about a job in the Environmental Service Department so I applied for it. There were a lot of things I had to learn to do like drive a fork lift and a high rise lift. I got the job and that is what I currently do. I have been with McKee Bakery (Little Debbie) for 21 years now and I love it even though it is hard work. My husband Jerry works as a truck driver for a christian company in Cleveland, TN. We are not sure when we are going to retire.

Jerry and I have been members of Hickory Valley Baptist Church for 15 years and are very involved there and love our church. My son and his wife and my daughter all go to church there as well. We have five grandchildren. Jessica, she goes to the University of Tennessee here in Chattanooga. Emily, works full time and is planning on starting college this Fall. Our grandson Tyler, just got married and lives in Dayton, TN. Christopher is in the Army and our grandson Brad is still in high school.
