one more interesting thing that happened after this article ...

Someone had found my brothers high school ring near the railroad tracks close to our childhood home many years ago. It had his initials engraved inside and was dated Class of 1974. After this person read the article they called me at work (the article mentioned my place of employment; I am listed as Kathy Daugherty which was my married name and I still use it professionally). The person told me about the ring and my brother was so excited to hear that someone had found it. He had loaned it to a girlfriend before going overseas to Germany soon after he enlisted. I contacted him (in Maryland at that time, near Camp David) and he managed to get the ring back. The founder was so gracious, thanked him for serving the country, and though my brother offered him a reward, he refused to take it.

Just another blessing ... one never knows.

Hershel enlisted at age 17 so he finished high school in the Air Force. And he went on to get a college education. The article doesn't mention Camp David because his presidential security clearance didn't allow him to share it while working there. But he had just been told that was his next appointment when this article came out. He has lived and work all over the world, from Germany to Australia, Bosnia to Kosovo
