
John D. “Jack” Bierman, age 78, of Stevens Point, passed away on January 13, 2019 at Marshfield Medical Center in Marshfield, WI while surrounded by his loving family.
Jack was born September 29, 1940 in Storm Lake, IA to Vernon and Ruth (Daniels) Bierman. He was raised in Cherokee, IA, graduating from Washington High School, a proud member of the class of 1958. In 1962 Jack graduated from Drake University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a major in finance. He was united in marriage to Chris Irwin on December 19, 1970 in Fairfax, VA. She preceded him in death on February 7, 2014.
Upon graduation from Drake, Jack joined the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) in Washington, DC as a loan officer. During is 4 ½ years with REA, Jack spent six months on active duty with the US Naval Air Reserve. He remained in the reserves for six years, being honorably discharged at a 2nd Class Petty Officer.
In 1967, Jack took a position with the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Eximbank), beginning a 35 year career as an International Trade Finance Banker; first in Washington with Eximbank, then in Chicago and New York with the then First National Bank of Chicago (now a part of JPMorgan Chase), and finally back in Washington with the Banker’s Association for Finance and Trade (BAFT). During his career Jack served on a number of National and International Boards of Directors and Trade Committees. His job gave him a love of travel which followed him throughout his life.
Jack retired to Stevens Point in 2002 to be closer to his family. He and Chris were dedicated to serving his community. In that regard, Jack has been a volunteer at Operation Bootstrap for 15 years, was an early member and past President of the LIFE (Learning is Forever) program, served on the Y Foundation Board, is a member and past President of the Kiwanis Club of Stevens Point, is a proud member of the Thursday morning ROMEO breakfast club, and most importantly, is an active member of Holy Spirit Parish, where he served on the Pastoral Council, is Co-Chair of the Building Upon A Firm Foundation Capital Campaign, sang in the choir, and was a reader at morning Mass.
In his spare time, Jack enjoyed reading, traveling, working crossword puzzles, and especially spending time with his family. Jack is survived by his sons, Doug (Trina) and Steve (Brenda) of Stevens Point; and Brian (Jenn) of Naperville, IL. He is further survived by seven grandchildren, Braeden, Brianna, Brea, McKenzie, Addison, Tyler, and Dylan; brother, Dick (Judy) of Cherokee, IA; brother and sisters in law, Dick and Mary Jo Kelly of Pittsburgh, PA and Jack and Ann Irwin of Woodstock, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Holy Spirit Parish with Rev. Steve Brice presiding. Visitation will be held at Boston Funeral Home on Friday, January 18 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the service. Jack will be buried next to his wife at Guardian Angel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Operation Bootstrap or the American Cancer Society.
