Doug M. Mathis, 69, Independence, Mo., died Monday, Dec 24 at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a sudden illness.

He was born Sept. 21, 1938 in Cherokee, son of Paul and Helen Bergert Mathis.  He married Roberta K. Althaus on Sept. 25, 1971 in Chicago.  He was preceded in death by his wife in 2005 and by his father in 1999.  He is survived by four daughters-Beth Bresson of independence, Teresa Narland of independence, Deborah Mathis of hickory N.C., Sheri Hudson Cocoa Beach, Fla.; a son, Michael Mathis of Wisconsin; him mother Helen Mathis of Cherokee and a brother Roger and his wife Joan.
