At the end of the summer in either our Jr. or Sr. year, four of us, me, Gary Sisco, Ed Bistany and Hubie Lynch drove up Highway One into New England and Quebec.  We quit our summer jobs a couple of weeks early.   Our chariot was a 1963 Ford station wagon that Gary scrounged from his Dad's garbage hauler business in North Jersey.  We fixed it up, named it the Phoenix (arising from the ashes) and even painted that name and a picture on of a Phoenix on the doors.  I recall stopping at Bistany's aunt's house, where we were fed a great Lebanese meal.  We also stopped in Lowell, Mass. to see Tiger Troy.  After dinner we went to a local "Sociial Club."  Tiger's crazy cousin, who's name I forget, came along.  We had a memorable evening with a stripper, or at least Tiger's cousin did.   (Gary Sisco and I made a similar trip the summer before and I could be mixing up some of these experiences). We then progressed to Maine, where we stipped to see Jimmy Bray, in Owls Head Maine. (This may have been the first trip)  After the operator gave us his Dad's phone number we called and invited ourselves orver.  In the early 1970's you still called information and spoke to a human.  There were only two Brays listed and we didn't know the name of Jiim's Dad, and we called his uncle.  We called back the operator, got the same operator who said:  "Got the wrong one, eh?"  Gary then called Jim and the converastaion was someting like:  "Remember when you said to stop in if you ever come to Maine?  Well we thought we would."  When Jim asked when we were planning to come, Gary said "About 10 minutes from now."  We were graciously welcomed by Jim and his family.  Jim's family were lobsterman and Jim took us for a boat ride, fed us, etc.  It was also the Maine Lobster Festival nearby and we ate lobster and had our picture taken with Ms. Maine. On the first trip with Gary, John Walck rode his motorcycle (an Atlas) up to join Gary and I.

Anyway, back to our trip with Hubie Lynch.  We knew his family called him Chip, but we called him Hubie.  A great guy, I can recall visiting his family, who lived nearby during school.  On our New England and Candadian adventure, we tried several activities that eventually had us referring to him as "the expert."  One of these activities was horseback riding.  Bistany and I admitted we had never been on a horse in our life, not counting merry-go-rounds.  Gary admitted to limited experience.  Hubie said he was an expert.  The ride went OK until, as we returned to the stable.  As soon as we got within sight of the barn, Hubie's horse took off at a full gallop for the barn, with him hanging on for dear life.  The only thing that prevented him from being decapitated, was the stable hand standing in front of the door waving his hands.  The next activity we attempted was sailing.  We rented a small sailboat.  Again, Ed, Gary, and I admitted our ignorance, but Hubie told us he was an accomplished sailor.  We were OK while we had the wind behind us, but when we wanted to turn around and come back, nobody could figure out how.  I seemed to remember something about "tacking" from a book I read, so I took over the tiller.  Between that and copying the actions of some people in a nearby boat.  We continued our trip and had a great time in Canada. Since we had long hair and beards, I am not sure we would be allowed into Canada now, but it was a more gentle time  On the way back we stopped at the Portland docks and bought 19 lobsters (about $1 each) to take back one for each member of our family.

It was the English Social Club in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The cousins name is Jimmy. He did have a time with the stripper, not sure how great it was! Interestingly, Ed Bistany had an Uncle who had a market in Lawrence. My family used to shop there often. Ed worked there a summer or two. I probably saw him a few times before we ended up together at the X.

Your two visits were memerable! If I remember right we got pretty rowdy in a restaurant in Maine!

If I remember right, Greg Wall and I made our first road trip to Maine and Canada the summer after our sophomore year. We drove up in my 69 Camero.  The second trip was after Wall and I had compleated Summer Camp.  Chip Lynch and Ed Bistany joined on that adventure.  I had picked up two 63 Ford Falcons, one coupe and the other a station wagon. We cannilbalized parts from the coupe to put the station wagon on the road. It was a fun road trip with stops in Rhode Island, Massachusetts,Owls Head Maine, Arcadia National Park, Quebec City and Montreal.  We camped out most of the time, but rented rooms in the cities.  We rented a room on St. Cathrine Street in Montreal, not knowing that it was kind of the Red Light district. It was an interesting trip with a good bunch of guys.
