A graveside service for U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Bernard F. Mimms, Jr. will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the United States Naval Academy Cemetary in Annapolis, Md.
Capt. Mimms died of cancer Wednesday in his home in Dumfries, Va. He was 31. Capt. Mimms was a 1981 graduate of Manchester High Scholl and a 1985 graduate of the Naval Academy, where he earned a degree in civil engineering. He was also a high jumper on the track team.
During graduation ceremonies at the academy, Capt. Mimms was singled out for his courage and perseverance in returning to school, despite having had several cancer operations. At the time of his death, he had been through more than a dozen bouts with cancer.
Capt. Mimms also held a master's degree in Operations Analysis/Operations Research from the naval postgraduate program.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Sharry Mimms of Dumfries; his parents, Yvonne A. and Bernard F. Mimms, Sr; and three sisters, Brigette, Brandy and Kori Mimms, all of Richmond.

To my brother Bernie. I have so many memories of Bernie in high school but one that stands out is when we were side by side as running backs, Bernie ran to the left side and was tackled. I was right beside Bernie on the ground because I tried to block for him and we both were in pain with a pulled muscle at the same time. Too funny! While Marvin and I went to his funeral in Maryland it felt like a dream. I can't believe Bernie has left us so young. We miss you Bernie!

I also had the opportunity to be a teammate of Bernie Mimms. I will never forget Bernie and I think of him often when things in my life get rough. I remember many days on the football practice field when Bernie and I were so banged up and I felt like quiting and giving up. I can still hear & see Bernie getting in my face and saying come on Steve suck it up we can make it !!!
Bernie played football just like he lived life. He never quit or gave up on anything no matter the odds against him. I am very thankful and blessed to have had such a courageous person likeBernie Miimms touch my life. He will always be my Lancer teammate and I will never forget# 37 !

Bernie was a true friend. Both at MHS and beyond. I will always remember his enthusiasm and sarcasm on many subjects, whether at school or at fun. Perhaps my favorite memory was after high school, when I invited Bernie to the UVA-Navy game in Charlottesville. Well he shows up with a carload of midshipman and they all squeezed in my apt for the weekend. For the gratitude, he left me his lid. I still have that Middies hat and look at it often. He was an officer and a gentleman but most of all, I am proud that he was my friend.
