After graduating from Schurz High School, I attended Michigan State University. There I received a B. A. degree in elementary education and taught second grade in Des Plaines, Illinois for nine years. In 1970, I married Jon Weichelt, and we will be celebrating our 40 wedding anniversary on June 27th. I recall that Jon and I won the award at our 10th high school reunion shortly after our marriage as the most recently married couple. Jon has been self employed in the voice logging recorder business for the last 25 years.
Jon and I have three children, David, Kristen and Karin. David is a software engineer in Minneapolis. He and his wife, Julie, presented us with our very first grandchild, Jonah, in November. Jonah suffered a stroke and a heart attack shortly after his birth, but fortunately seems to be progressing normally so far. Kristen is a business training specialist at Office Max Corporate Headquarters in Naperville. She was married to Chris Zimmerman in 2007 and they reside in Elk Grove Village. Karin lives in downtown Chicago and is a flight attendant for Air Tran Airlines.
After our children were born, I was a stay at home mom until my youngest child was in school. I did not go back to full time teaching, but instead worked as a substitute teacher and teacher assistant. Jon and I have lived in Arlington Heights for 39 years. We both have a great love for travel and have enjoyed the challenge of guiding ourselves around many countries in Europe over the years. Many of our vacations since we were married have been to our oceanside condo in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida. I have a great interest in photography and will be spending my senior years trying to organize a huge closet filled with a lifetime of photo memories. I also thrive on being outdoors in the sun and consequently gardening has become my favorite summer pastime. I have enjoyed good health up until 2007, when I was diagnosed with an incurable blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma. Since then I have been treated very aggressively, and have fortunately come through two stem cell transplants very well. I am now in a near complete remission, have learned to cherish each day and am enjoying life to the fullest.
Through my life, I have had the good fortune of keeping in touch with many of my childhood and school friends. I now look forward to the reunion to renew friendships from those wonderful four years we all shared at Schurz.
