Robert Hashimoto

As long as he is in good shape and can stay focused he will do fine.  The Marines will break down the individual and build them up as a team.  As long as he understands that this is the process, he should do well.

Now, if you EVER, EVER, EVER wanted to get even for anything he has ever done in his life, I can give you some great tips:

  • Send him a letter with writing all over the back of the envelope with XOXOXO or SWAK

  • Pour a bottle of perfume on a letter to him

  • Have a girl send him a pair of panties and/or condom and say hurry home

  • Skip the formalities of adding his present rank (Private or Pvt.) and add the rank you think he could be at the end of his career…maybe General?

Keep in mind that over time he will forgive you, it just may take a decade or two, but he will be guaranteed to make an impression with his drill instructors.

@Bob Hashimoto - thanks for the encouraging words! Isaac has mostly been a fabulous stepson. I think I'll leave it to his brothers or step-sister to try the mail pranks you've listed. His Pops knows a funny raunchy one from his veteran buddies too.

Grace ---

Ditto to Bob’s advice and counsel – it’s perfect.

I’ve not met your son, but, I met his parents, and, really don’t need to know more – I’ve no doubt, while this will challenge him, he will do  well. I'll also keep Isaac in my good thoughts as well.

On the light-side, I can share too - with regard to Bob’s tips on getting even, that I can almost speak from experience regarding the perfumed mail. When I was at MCRD SD, my cousin – who was married to a Marine, dumped what must have been an entire bottle of cologne on a letter she sent me. As Bob alluded, life was about to get very interesting for me to receive that letter – but, I was fortunate, my cousin used so much cologne – the smell actually permeated the entire mailbag of letters for our platoon, and, luckily, no way of telling which letter was the culprit. (Knew it was mine when I opened the letter and it was still damp.) Whew ‘dat!

FYI too --- as a Marine’s family, you'd want to know that, in two-days – on November 10th, is the Marine Corps’ Birthday, which is particularly celebrated worlwide every year.  On November 10, 1775, at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, PA –  the “Continental Marines” – later the U.S. Marine Corps, was formed by committee of the Continental Congress. This Thursday we’ll be a sprite 241 years-old.

@John Simmers Thank you too! Isaac told us about the Marines birthday and we were noting how it's the day before Veterans Day. Quite an auspicious week to ship to MCRD SD. Marc is still awaiting The Call, which is supposed to happen anytime from Monday night to Thursday night. I hope Isaac remembers the phone number as he's been dependent on his own phone all these years to call the parents. He certainly took with him a long list of addresses of family members to whom he will write - my fingers are crossed that he noted our two phone numbers there as well, Marc did tell him to call me if it happened during work hours because Marc is so often on a business call, and we both know what to expect. Thank goodness for Facebook, the private pages for Marine parents have been comforting. Turns out we know a bit more than some parents do before their recruits ship, good for Isaac (and we asked questions).

Andrea,

Thank you for the good feedback for my wacky stories. Maybe I can still remember because I have not reached 58 yet cheeky, so I only have until next March to keep posting wacky stories before my memory gets shot. crying

Wow! Kewl smileys here: yes

WOW!!!!surprise

Guess what I got in the mail today?mail

My Lane Tech Alumni Association Directory and CD. yes

It was originally suppossed to get here in August, but there were some issues with the project. Better late than never smiley

So, guess who was the first person (besides myself) I went and looked up in my new directory? (Hint: see my post #159)broken heart

I am such a little devil

winkwink (I know.....I am now obsessed with the smiley feature here)

Michelle Milkovic (Weiner)

Yeah sorry about the delay Ken.  The company who produced the directories was bought out by a competitor in the middle of the Lane order.  frown

Janet Peterson (Ingraffia)

Michelle, although I have gotten the past issues of the alumni directory, I guess I missed this one. Is there somewhere I can order a copy? Also, Ken, I agree with Andrea. I love reading your crazy stories. Wish I could remember more...guess my life was just too boring.

Janet,

Thank you for that. I guess some events have just stuck with me, but if it wasn't for all the folks here at the forum and all the folks at the reunion jogging my memory with their stories, then I wouldn't remember some of my wacky adventures from Lane. I am hoping that our reunion classmates continue to check in here from time to time and stay in contact. Now that I have my Alumni directory, I am hoping to contact some more classmates and get them in here as I have plenty of more wacky stories of my grade school adventures that a few Lane Classmates are aware of blush and some wacky college stories that a few Lane classmates are aware of blush.

BTW, here is the directory:

Better yet I have found some of the scrap sold off when the foundry was removed. Extra Lane Tech wall mounts in two sizes, Indian heads and Eagles. It's funny but I obtained  a few for the next reunion.  The students now don't know how to pour metal. My kids can't believe they let us do that work. And I still have my bylines from the Linotype machines than were cast at the back of the machines in the first typesetting shop. Those are adventures now not many Warriors can experience that most of us did.

Ken, thanks for posting that you have the 2016 Directory in hard copy. I only bought the CD-ROM and haven't had a chance to look at it on my slow home computer. Can you tell me (offlist at grace.danziger@gmail.com is fine) whether Michael Goi has listed any contact info? I haven't seen anyone who posts on the forum offer to virtually introduce Michael Goi and Diane Quon. Thanks Ken!

Grace,
Since your post, I did try to reach out to Mike Goi - but, the info I have is old (this has happened to me before). I am new to Twitter and happen to be following Mike - but, not yet proficient enough to try and reach him there (if even possible). Maybe soon, but, for now - in the meantime, if it helps, he is:

Hi John, thanks for trying to reach Michael Goi and for his Twitter handle. Thanks to Ken Ortiz (thanks again Ken!) I have some contact info from the Alumni Directory and will try to reach out to him for our fellow alum Diane Quon. You have all been so great to help me and Diane! I will let everyone know whether the two of them succeed in connecting.

Do you all remember some of the "fashions" that were around during our time at Lane? Well, I found another old photo of mine and the date is also shown on the photo. So, in case you were curious about what was "GQ" in December 1973, here you go. I could describe it in words, but you know that a picture is worth only one word......"YIKES"surprise! Also, you gotta love them glasses cool

SO, please do not hold back on those fashion "critiques" cheeky

Bicentennials represent at LTAA Clocktower Club last night at Lake Effect micro brewery.  Marie and Andrew it was great to see you!  What do you all think about a casual holiday meet up?  I know Kristi's coming home... maybe Chief O'Neill's pub in between Christmas and NYE?

11/19/16 09:57 AM #256

Andrea M Adam

I think that would be a great idea and I think it would mean a lot to her. Also, Chief O'Neill's isn't too far from where she grew up. Keep us informed Michelle.

Hi everyone!!

Flights are arranged. Flying in on December 20, leaving January 1st. Bringing my Jodi Girl this visit. I want her to see how awesome, and freaking cold Chicago is at Christmas. We are staying at the W across from Navy Pier, one of my favorite places in the world to this day, so we can see the fireworks from the hotel room if our Hawaii blood can't handle the temp.

Looking forward to to seeing everyone again. It doesn't matter where, as long as I can get there by the L, bus, or UBER.

See everyone soon!!

BTW, my daughter Jodi will be in the Macy' s Thanksgiving Day Parade. She is a Saxophone player in the Hawaii AllState Marching Band. If you Watch it, look for the short girl in the Saxophone section who looks just like me. :)

Hi Michelle,

Please keep me posted about this meet-up...I'd like to come! BTW...it was really nice seeing you after 40 years! I enjoyed dinner, the "grapes' and the conversation. Look forward to seeing you and other fellow alumni soon.

Michelle,

I would also be interested in a 76'er meet between x-mas and new years, so I hope you will post the location address and date/time here when you get it firmed up.

So great that Kristi & Jodi will be in town for Christmas and New Year's - enjoy your trip and the meet-up! Wish I could be there too but all the kids and some extended famiy are gathering with us in Los Angeles this Christmas.

Also want to report Good News - thanks again to Ken Ortiz and John Simmers - our fellow alums Michael Goi and Diane (Moy) Quon have been reintroduced and will be connecting on their filmmaking work. Excellent networking, Class of '76ers!

ROAD TRIP! The LTAA is going to Mesa to see the Sox play the Cubs on February 27th! We are trying to gauge interest before we commit to filling the outfield party deck at Sloan Park with 40-50 Laneites! Interested? Game tickets including food and soft drinks at approximately $55 per person. Airfare and hotel on your own. Maybe some tailgating or other Lane-centric activities around that date depending on the number and enthusiasm of participants. Email us at lanetechalumni@gmail.com to let us know if this would be something you would attend.

Baseball in February... yes!

Grace –

Glad to hear that Mike and Diane were reacquainted, however, I’m respectfully deferring gratitude back to you.

It was your persistence that assured success.

Friends like you are invaluable.
