Ken,

I enjoy reading your stories. You have a great memory! Please keep sharing.

Ken... you have a mind like a steel trap!  How do you remember so much detail?  Looking forward to hearing more Lane Tech Tales on the 29th at O'Donovan's including the great reveal of these ladies' identities! Shhhhh........

John Kownacki... how is it we never worked together at Dunkin in the 70's?!?  I slung those donuts from sophomore year til 1978.  Still can't wear hot pink.  Do you remember Wendy Zerfas?  She was my BF freshman year and hung out at Portage Park. (Our Lady of Victory).  We got our jobs their together.  Her mom made her transfer from Lane to Lucy Flower so Wendy could learn what her mother considered marketable secretarial skills... tragic.  We went to the Styx concert together at Lane's Auditorium.  She beat it to the mountains in CO about 2 minutes after graduation never to return... and never became a "secretary".

Ken, I don't know what you do for a living but if John Hughes was still alive, he'd buy any screen play you'd write. I love your stories and I think we can all sympathize with your stupidity. At least I can. I was right up there with you in the IDIOT department. Keep sharing.

Maja Wiesinger (Ramirez)

Would anybody like to share what you remember of the Styx concert, the evening, the band itself?

I honestly don't remember if I saw them at Lane or not but I DO remember seeing them at the old Weber HS whenI was in eighth grade or a freshman. They were, of course awesome, at least to us at that age. And I think they played "Lady" 3 times which was totally fine with us.

Sorry gang. Never did Top 40's. Even in high school. I did regularly go to Frank Zappa's "Mutha's Day" concert. I remember Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull in Chicago. And that big concert at Soldier Field headed by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Something like 100,000 people.

I did date a teeny bopper at Lane, though. She like Captain & Tenille. Yecch!

Merry Christmas to all and have a great new year

Merry Christmas to all the Bicentenials and their loved ones and family. Does anyone remember the Christmas cookies with the green frosting they served this time of year. The frosting was so sugared it was almost like rock candy. And the raisin oatmeal cookies in the shape of trees?

12/26/16 03:09 PM #302

John Todesco

Yeah Don. They were shaped like Christmas wreaths. They were made with corn flakes mixed with melted marshmallows and green food coloring.  Then little " red hots" on them as berries. They had a self life of abut 10 years ⛄️

Yep, those were there too. Had flashbacks while helping the grandkids with Santa cookies. Some of them had silver colored food ornaments that were supposedly candy as well but couldn't be chewed. We had it good😋. Pizza slice and mashed potatoes for $.49. And green jello. Dinty Moore canned stew on white bread slices. It was all good training for those who chose a career around the military. Never could do waxed beans though.

I remember when Reagan was giving out the govt. surplus cheese. Laneites were eating chees for weeks! One time they got a bunch of govt. surplus canned prunes. And I may HSBC been the only one in the whole school who liked prunes!

Before the pizza slice, pizza was some leftover sloppy joe on a toasted English muffin with some fake cheese on top!

And, every couple weeks was chop suey day. That was when they took all their leftovers, mixed them together and served them over rice.

Mrs. Fleming, the head lunchroom lady!

Just found this picture.  Ken Ortiz... apparently you weren't the only one with plaid pants and platform shoes.

And why isn't anyone dancing?

Maybe a pause between sets - who's the bass player with his back to camera?

Good to see these friendly faces tonight, happy to see Kristi in town all the way from sunny Hawaii...  and no one will be surprised to hear that Ken Ortiz wins ugly sweater bragging rights.  Happy New Year Bicentennials!

Janet Peterson (Ingraffia)

We were there with you in spirit. And we had on our ugly t-shirts (sorry but Florida is too hot for sweaters. We also went to all restaurant that claims to serve Chicago food called Fratellos. Although it comes close, Chicago pizza is better! People were looking at us kind of funny as we were walking through the restaurant, but we stopped caring long ago about what other people think. Life is too short...gotta have fun!!!

Michelle Milkovic (Weiner)

Well done Ingraffias!  Proving once again that the Bicentennials are both fearless and bold when it comes to our fashion choices.

A couple folks were asking about the Alumni Association Spring Training thing... here's the deal:

Cubs v Sox , February 27th at 1:05PM, Sloan Park

This week, the LTAA is pre-purchasing 75 tickets for the party deck (not sure if it's the first or third baseline sides yet sorry)  63 alums have already reserved spots including a handful from our class.  We will most likely find a place to hold a spontaneous after party and several of us plan to attend the game against the Indians on the 26th and/or the Angels on the 28th.

If you have already alerted the LTAA to your desire to attend, send in a check or money order for $55 per ticket ASAP to:

Lane Tech Alumni Association, PO Box 18200, Chicago IL 60618-0200

If you are interested in snapping up any of the 12 remaining seats, reach out to me right away and also send in a check.

(sorry about the check thing but we're in the middle of a technology platform transition over the next three weeks and we don't want to risk losing any transactions... so we're going old school!)

Michelle

June K Hori (Yamasaki)

Had a fun time last night at O'Donovan's! We were a small group, but it made it easy to talk to everyone. Let's continue to keep in touch.

Ken Ortiz

I agree with June. I had a great time at our 12/29 get together and also was able to connect more personally with the group there. I hope that we can see that we have this awesome "76" connection and that we can use it to continue to support each other and be supported by each other as needed.

I want to also wish a Happy Birthday to the many "76'ers" who have had birthdays the last week. Was there something going on in March 1958 (maybe a spring two-week blizzard) that caused all this "snuggle" time with those parents?  Was there a Christmas baby competition that year with the winner getting an EDSEL? Enquiring minds wanna know!cheeky

Janet and Peter,

Those shirts were awesome, and I think we can consider those as "Ugly Christmas Sweaters - Lite".

HAPPY NEW YEAR 76ERS!

I'm sorry I was not able to attend the get together. Looked like a good time.

Try next time!
